Past projects :
Support to NGOs :
1. NICE (Needy Illiterate Children Education – www.nice-india.org
) :
NICE is founded by Mr. Purnachandrarao in May 2002 in Mynampadu village of Guntur District. It works towards balanced development of illiterate and very poor Indian children, through education. NICE identifies the children from bottom-most strata of the Indian society, and provides them food, clothes, shelter and formal education. They follow the CBSE model and education is in English Medium. The school has around 100 students now and up to 8 th standard.
Giri Tiruvuri and some family members made a visit to this organization in Guntur District in January 2007 (made a small personal contribution to sponsor one student for one year);
“We found the organization and the people really dedicated and sincere. It's a fully residential school; even the teachers have to be resident. The kids are loved and happy.
I met with Mr. Purnachandrarao a few times in Hyderabad and it's an enriching experience. He is very forthcoming in giving me pointers to other organizations, information about registration etc. He seems to be a genuine individual with a very simple lifestyle. There is a very conscious and successful effort in keeping the administrative costs to near zero. At this time, they need and deserve our support. “
Dr.Raman foundation has given them a contribution to support 3 children for the year 2007-08. We helped them to get support for another 2 students through other avenues.
2. Sankurathri foundation – ( www.sankurathri.org ):
Sankurathri Foundation (SF) was founded in 1989 by Dr. Chandrasekhar Sankurathri in a serene rural location outside the town of Kakinada, East Godavari District. Dr. Chandrasekhar lives on site and supervises all internal programs and outreach campaigns. They have the following primary objectives.
The eradication of avoidable blindness through the provision of accessible and affordable quality eye care to all.
The elimination of illiteracy and child labor by educating children and their parents in rural areas. Emphasis is made on imparting the knowledge, discipline and skills necessary for them to become self-reliant.
Giri Tiruvuri visited them in July 2007 and again in October 2007 and met with Dr.Chandrasekhar. Giri and one of the foundation's advisors Prof. KVS Ramarao made another visit in December 2007.
“The eye hospital is really big (Srikiran Eye Hospital). They conduct about 12000 eye surgeries every year (most of them cataract). 90% of these are free. They conduct awareness camps in the villages of five districts (East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Visakhapatnam, Khammam). To my dismay, Dr.Chandra told me that many of these villagers don't even know that cataract is curable. They bring these people to their hospital by their own busses, conduct the surgeries and again drop them at the campsites.
The school (Sarada Vidyalayam) has about 128 kids. They have up till 8 th standard (8 th standard is introduced this year). It is Free Education; however, the focus really is on quality of the education. You need to see it to believe it. The handwriting of the kids itself is an example of the focus on quality. Last year, 3 of their students got more than 95% in the seventh standard and the least is 82%. Mind you, these kids are not from educated families. They teach state syllabus in Telugu medium. This is a non-residential school and the kids are picked up from their homes every day by school bus. They are provided mid-day meal and milk in the evening. Everything was conducted so professionally here; the staff seemed to be taking pride in what they are doing.
I strongly believe this is an NGO that we can work with closely. They deserve to get support and we can learn a lot from them, especially on quality education.”
The foundation has given them a contribution to support 6 children for the year 2007-08.
3. Kasturibai Mahila Samajam
This is on old age home established in the Nidadavolu town of West Godavari District. This is currently run by Ms.Vidula, who is a retired Hindi lecturer in Visakhapatnam and is one of the daughters of a Gandhian, Sanskrit Scholar, Sri Charla Ganapthi Sastry. It was started by Ms.Vidula's mother.
Giri Tiruvuri and some of his family members made a visit to the old age home in October.
“There are about 27 inmates in the old age home. It was a heart-touching experience to see those inmates, some of who do not have children and some others ignored by their children. Most of them were women. We could see that there is a general sense of happiness in those inmates because of the love and care. Some of them even show authority over Ms.Vidula as if she is their child. We realized that it requires a huge amount of emotional energy and a great sense of detached affection to run such a home. And, Ms.Vidula is doing it admirably.”
The foundation has given them a contribution to support one inmate for the year 2007-08. We helped them to get partial support for another inmate through other avenues.
Support to Government schools :
In 2007-08, the foundation contributed tube lights for all the classrooms to the Zilla Parishad High School of Bheemanapalli village (this is where Dr.Raman completed his high school).
Scholarship to a meritorious, economically poor Engineering student :
We provided financial support to the tune of Rs.10000 to a bright engineering student by name Jeevankumar in Vijayawada. It covers a part of his tuition fees of Rs.30000. Jeevan has over 90% in both SSC and Intermediate. He comes from a very poor family and is partially handicapped.
Special Clothes drive
:
Periodic drives are conducted to collect used clothes and toys to be distributed to poor and needy. A few hundred needy people including the residents of State Home for Blind (a blind college hostel in Dilsukhnagar), Taruni State Home (a women's orphanage in Yousufguda), Prema Nilayam (an old age home in Lungar House) and about a hundred road-side poor are among the recipients of the clothes collected thru' these drives so far.
